As of 2023, the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird is the fastest manned jet aircraft ever produced. It set the record in 1976 and has been retired since the late 1990s. The type entered service in the 1960s as a high-altitude (and obviously extremely high speed) military reconnaissance aircraft. Just 32 were built, nearly half of which were written off in accidents. Started in 2017, The Legends of Warfare series by Schiffer Publishing covers Aviation, Naval and Ground forces including aircraft of all types in a beautiful 9” x 9” hardcover format. Predominantly covering military aircraft from all eras, more volumes are being added each season. Each book is a concise history of a particular type of aircraft, well illustrated with over 100 black and white and colour photographs, and black & white line drawings and plans. Page counts vary depending on the aircraft, and some types are covered two volumes.
