Herpa of Germany started business as a model train manufacturer in 1949, followed by diecast automobiles in 1978, and ultimately 1:500 scale diecast aircraft 1987. Herpa's attention to detail and tampo printing systems led the industry in high quality diecast model aircraft markings, superceding other manufacturers that used decals. Herpa later added other scales, commonly 1:400 and 1:200.
