DH82a Tiger Moth 1:48 New tool 2020
There have been several 1/48 scale Tiger Moth kits issued over the years, the first being a kit put out by CHINGFORD MODEL AERODROME back in 1944 [ if somebody has one of these, I would LOVE to have a look at it !] but most have been toy like, indeed they were aimed at a young audience & required a lot of work to shape into something accurate by the dedicated anorak*. It was not until AEROCLUB issued their Moth in the 1990's did we finally get something that really looked like the prototype, but this too required a lot of work, being intended squarely for the professional modeler.Â
This then is the first high pressure injection molded kit of the Moth in 1/48 scale that is both accurate and easy to build ! Airfix remains in place at the top of it's class and has issued a wonderful kit that can be enjoyed by everybody. Although still a very fresh kit, there are already a few out-of-box builds online that look absolutely stunning ! This kit will be difficult to better and will set the standard for some time.
It has taken us 76 years since Chingford Model Aerodrome issued their model to finally get a true modern tool kit of this very important training aircraft. We have had several nostalgic issues by AURORA and it's many re-issues by companies such as SMER, notable primarily for their evocative box art but not much else. These old kits have their place in history & I admit I do love them, as they have provided me with much fun over the years. However, in the presence of a gem like this latest Airfix issue, they can now only be classified as antiques.
