Bishop, Barker, Beurling, Villeneuve. These are names that anyone with even a passing knowledge of the history of the Royal Canadian Airforce will recognize. And while the RCAF has produced some of the finest aviators the world has ever seen, it is so much more than pilots clashing in the skies defending Canada, or pushing the boundaries of flight in the early jet age, it is a team of people who, for 100 years have served Canadians abroad and at home with unrivalled passion and dedication to their duty.
Founded in 1924, the RCAF began life as "bush pilots in uniform" mapping the vast expanses of Canada, conducting fisheries patrols and spotting forest fires. It would not remain a humble government air service for long, by 1945 it had grown into the worlds fourth largest Air Force and had participated in all major theatres during the Second World War.Â
From Combat operations overseas to humanitarian assistance the world over, search and rescue and mercy flights at home, the RCAF has served Canada with honour and distinction for 100 years.
